‘Stranger Things’ Creds For Kate Bush To Yield Recognition For ‘Running Up That Hill’ Covers

Stranger Things Season 4 Yields Surprise HIt for Kate Bush with 1985's 'Running Up That HIll'

By Keith Walsh
The renewed popularity of Kate Bush’s single “Running Up That Hill, (A Deal With God)” (from 1985’s Hounds Of Love) due to its placement on Season 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix is widely known. While the tune was mostly played on college and alternative radio back in the day, a quick glance at the major streaming services reveal that “Running Up That Hill” has been covered many times. It seems that everyone from British alt rockers Placebo to 80s pop diva Tiffany have taken a shot at the tune.

Others less known, from Meg Myers to William Control have their own versions. Myers’ cover is especially nice, with some lovely, intentional distortion. Most hew to a close cover, with the same programmed drumbeat and ethereal vocals. Some sound so close as to be soundalikes, the one by Kim Petras for example. One exception is by Candy Says and Mark Canham, which subdues the beat, with some tender vocals.

Kate has said that she doesn’t often license her songs for film and TV, but made an exception because she’s a fan of Stranger Things. The song has just hit the US Top Ten on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Not that Kate needs the paycheck, but I’m sure she doesn’t mind.
